Pre-school, Mathematics and Numeracy
Whether it is telling the time, paying for groceries or setting the table for lunch, mathematics surrounds your child from an early age.
At Oaks Park we lay the foundations for maths in a fun and engaging way through singing, music and games. When working with your child we play with specialist materials to introduce the idea of maths in a physical and tangible form, which aligns their thinking and allows them to develop the ability in the abstract, written form. This avoids the mental blocks that often occur when children are faced with purely abstract concepts.
Number rods, sandpaper numerals, wooden numerals and counters all provide a fun, yet tangible experience with numbers, which allows the child to both understand and use numbers in a meaningful way.
Shapes are also introduced physically, with children playing with both 2-D and 3-D shapes to enable them to identify, name and draw them. We also explore shapes in the real world – it is an exciting time when a child realises that shapes are all around us and are able to name them.
